#AskAnyHondaDriver Testimonial Film Series

By:

In the game of happiness, Honda owners are winning. Ironically (perhaps) they are kicking the well-appointed butts of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes drivers in the loving-their-car-as- well-as-their-life department. Besides hearing epic Honda stories, we met the best people on earth. Maybe because an authentic, quality automobile attracts authentic, quality people. See for yourself by viewing our film project here: #AskAnyHondaDriver

Start Your Summer with Honda

By:

Once upon a time, the end of school was the greatest moment of the year.

The feeling of freedom, no more teachers, no more homework…cue the Alice Cooper!

TV Spot:

Unless of course you’re a parent, then the end of school means the beginning of dealing with your little darlings 24/7.

This classic dichotomy of emotions between kids and parents at the end of the school year drives this month’s Honda Start Your Summer sales event.

TV, online, POP, and social media videos have fun with kids and parents and the brilliant deals available on Hondas.

Enjoy, be you kid or parent.

2014 July 4 Honda Sales Event

By:

July4Honda Still

Ka-boom! Back by popular demand, our Holiday Hipsters Sammy & TJ returned to action for our explosive July 4th campaign for our Honda clients’ July 4 Honda Sales Event.

You may remember them from last summer, when they were hangin’ ten on the beach. This year, our boys—again played superbly by actors JJ Johnston and Dallas Bryant—make the scene at a smokin’ hot holiday barbecue, where their preoccupation with their beautiful new Hondas lead to a pyrospectacular climax.

We found the perfect setting for this production at the Wind & Oar Boat School, overlooking the Wilamette River in Portland. Under the leadership of Executive Director Peter Crim, this nonprofit organization teaches youth and adults the fine art of building wooden boats.

photo

This stunning example–featured in our spot–was built entirely by teenagers, and is owned by Norman Eder. Nice work!

With our DP Kevin Emmons making the car pop, and our pyrotechnics expert Kai Shelton making the fireworks really POP (aided in post by the digital effects genius of Rough House’s Eric Stafford & Kit Klangsin), we’re sure our Honda dealers will have a bang-up July 4th sales event.

Bring on the Summer

By:

We’re making it rain…

photo

for our Northwest Honda dealers. To “celebrate” the onset of summer, which usually means horrific weather in Portland, we created this fun TV, radio, and online campaign featuring Honda owners proudly showing us their new Hondas while getting pummeled by a good ole Northwestern rain storm: “Bring on the summer.”

Of course, even in Portland you really cannot count on rain on cue, so we got a little help from the rain makers from the TV series “Grimm”. Kai Shelton and his crew pumped water from the Columbia River, up into two of their customized “rain trees”. Then we fired up a 700 horsepower airplane propeller to make massive winds. Then we put our poor actors into the heart of the storm- (Jonas Grosserhode, Josh Belville, Kerri Shockley, Joseph Gibson, Derek Osting, Candi Kadel, Lana Sage, Royce Micah, Genevieve Howell, Jennifer Kelley, Cara Mitsuko) and rolled camera. Our DP Kevin Emmons steadied himself through the artificial storm and made the Hondas look beautiful, proving that Hondas really are a Northwest thing.

From the Desk of the Creative Chief: Honda’s Presidents Day Event

By:

Abe Lincoln bombs a beast, George Washington cruises snow bunnies in a stolen CRV, and our TV production team gets slammed by a blizzard on location where “The Shining” was filmed, in Mt. Hood, Oregon… sounds like its Honda’s President’s Day event.

Click below to see the spot.
We took our Presidential Holiday Icons,– (Dallas Bryant and JJ Johnson) last seen as Uncle Sam and Thomas Jefferson surfing on the 4th of July
4th July Hipstersup to Mt. Hood Oregon to show off the All Wheel Drive CRV, the steady handling of the front wheel drive Civic, and the always versatile All Wheel drive Pilot, all of which are on sale at the Honda Presidential Ride and Drive.
Our journey begins downtown, where we see Abe Lincoln walking the streets with a newly purchased snowboard under his arm. He bumps into his buddy George Washington, who is in the middle or test driving an All Wheel drive CRV.  The Presidents launch a plan of attack that takes them up to snow country, despite the fact the Honda dealer is still sitting in the back.
Big tip of the big black hat to Pippenger Productions who fought through a blizzard to deliver cars and cameras and crew to a snow blanketed location.  The location happened to be where they filmed the exterior scenes of “The Shining”.  It’s also where we all stayed which was a little creepy.
Mt.Hood6
We shot right through the storm –a virtual white out, which created a beautiful white back round, more like a studio than a ski mountain. DP Kevin Emmons and his crew managed to get a spectacular look out of the snowy conditions.  And once Rough House’s colorist Roger Krakow worked his magic, the film looked amazing… like we planned it all along.

From the Desk of the Creative Chief: Supernatural

By:

There were more than just trick or treaters afoot this Halloween season. Ghosts? Mummies? Vampires? Old news. This year, it was about possessed Honda Civics.

Click the picture below to watch the spot.

Cars are flying off the lot!

For Honda’s Supernatural Sales Event, we wanted to conjure the spirit of spooky to make cars disappear off the showroom floor like a specter in the night.

Now, making cars fly out of dealerships is what Baker Street Advertising does best, but how to summon the Supernatural for our film… Who you Gonna Call?

Well, we called Spy Editorial.

And they went old school with a supernatural cloud effect inspired by the 1984 Ghostbusters Skyscraper scene… “Are you the key master?”

Click on the picture below to see how it was made.

The Making of Hondas Creepy Clouds

The crazy cloud effect was created in a 77 gallon water tank filled with half saltwater, half freshwater. Then, we angled the camera under the tank to match footage we’d taken from the front of the Honda Dealership. This is where the magic happens. Milk magic. We shot milk into the tank through tiny tubes and let those white wisps crash together as the camera rolled.

As for the disappearing cars and all the rest, well we’ve got a lot of creepy friends to make it happen.

From the Desk of the Creative Chief: Uncle Sam and Thomas Jefferson Go Surfing

By:

With Honda’s July 4th sales event coming, we enlisted our Holiday Hipster icons to spread the news.  You may remember Tommy J and Sam from last year’s July 4th Honda spot, where they were hanging in a coffee shop, surf’n the web, and just chillin.

Honda Hipsters

Well, this year, our idea was to send Uncle Sam and Thomas Jefferson surfing for real, showing off how epic Honda’s are for the great outdoors, and hype the deals at the July 4 Honda Sales Event. To make this spot work, we wanted to make the cars look like a million dollars even though the comedy is fairly cheap.  Check out how ridiculously hot the CR-V looks with a surfboard on its rack.  And marvel how a surfboard can fit in the back of a fuel-efficient sporty Fit and stylish Civic.

surfin pres

Check out the :60 extended version here.

To get the perfect look for the cars and TV spot, we headed out to the Oregon coast, a couple hours outside of Portland, where our actors, JJ Johnston and Dallas Bryant, reside.

Oregon, the beautiful

We also enlisted the talents of DP extraordinaire Kevin Emmons.  Kevin’s eye and a rare 2 days of incredible weather (thanks David) made for a luscious look. And as promised, the comedy was plenty cheap.

Three cars 4 Honda

See the :10 shortened cut here.

Now the twist on this story created a story of its own.  The punch line of this spot is that as TJ steps from the car bragging about his spectacular 44 mpg, he reveals a bathing suit that is… well as Uncle Sam so delicately put it, “Tight.”

To find just the right suit that everybody felt walked the line between funny and “awkward” (as my 12 year old put it) we had to scour the streets of San Francisco from the Castro to the Haight.  Here’s the short list, so to speak.

Option #1: The Hugo Boss

Option 1

Option #2: The Star Spangled Spanx

From the Desk of the Creative Chief: Presidents’ Day

By:

Like everybody else, Honda had a Presidents’ Day Sale.

And like everybody else, we used Abe Lincoln and George Washington imagery.

But unlike everybody else, our George and Abe have no idea they are Presidents.

They walk and talk like a couple of hipsters who just got an epic deal on a new Honda.

The only strange thing about the scene is that they happen to be dressed like Presidents. This theater of the absurd approach gave our Presidents’ Sale effort plenty of breakthrough as our clients enjoyed historic sales over the period of the event.

From the Desk of the Creative Chief: 2012 It’s Almost Over

By:

To mark the end of a pretty amazing year, the Baker Street Players got together to create this blockbuster sales event campaign for the Northern California and Northwest Honda Dealers.

Bringing this kind of production value and sheer enthusiasm on a budget of a two week sales event requires the “Our Gang” approach: “Let’s put on a show!”

Final Spot: “Happy Honda Days: Almost Over”

From the Desk of the Creative Chief: Listen

By:
Sometimes it’s better to not do it yourself.

Funny how the idea for our latest Honda initiative came about: listening.

What a concept: listening to your clients as they discuss the issues facing their business.  It’s something we do with our Honda and Acura clients once a month. And more times than not, by not talking too much, and letting our board members hash out their business challenges, we walk away with a boatload of new ideas for strategic initiatives and marketing programs that were never on the plan.

This was one of those times. (more…)
